Restoran Klub književnika

Stari grad · Francuska 7,, Stari grad · 011 2627931

A decade or two ago, for most Belgraders, the Writers’ Club was a somewhat mystical place, more myth than kafana, with membership in a secret society requiring much more than money and overnight success. (Bogdan Tirnanić in the book "Belgrade for Beginners") Time spent at the Writers’ Club represents the most pleasant moments of my travels through Yugoslavia. (Kirk Douglas) On its list of regular guests, the Writers’ Club keeps many great names: Momo Kapor, Ivo Andrić, Danilo Kiš, Dobrica Ćosić, Matija Bećković, Zoran Radmilović, Olja Ivanjicki, Miroslav Krleža, Borislav Pekić, Bogdan Tirnanić, Aleksandar Vučo, Olivera Katarina, as well as Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Richard Burton, Sophia Loren, Alberto Moravia, Elizabeth Taylor, Clint Eastwood, and many others. The Writers’ Club is a place of good food and legendary stories. In the Club, Ivo Andrić gave his first statement after receiving the Nobel Prize. Here Danilo Kiš and Momo Kapor socialized regularly, and for the first time together felt old. This is the place where Rockefeller came for dinner among the first and left among the last. For almost seventy years, the Writers’ Club has been a place where many loves began and blossomed. This is the only place, their friends said, where Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton never argued. This is the place where Olivera Katarina got engaged and married in a single evening. The Writers’ Club was the first witness to the relationship between Ljiljana and Momo Kapor. Today, seventy years later, Belgrade has changed. The Writers’ Club has changed too, but some things have stayed the same: good food prepared according to traditional recipes and a pleasant atmosphere where today’s big names sit together with tomorrow’s young hopes.
