When you think of a warm, freshly cooked dish from your childhood kitchen, of tasty and juicy grilled meat that can only be the real thing, on charcoal, by the best masters; when you would eat the best steak in town; when you feel like drinking top wine in good company while violin or tambura refreshes your memories or stirs emotions—come to Zlatni bokal (Skadarska 26), where everything has long been devoted to supreme bohemian enjoyment, that is, respect for all your senses, in one of Belgrade’s oldest parts—Skadarlija. Through the centuries, stories have been told within these walls, songs have been sung, and good wines have been drunk... Once a wine cellar, then a small tavern on old Belgrade cobblestones, and today an excellent restaurant with an offer worthy of respect, it does not lose that old spirit in which loves began and ended over a glass and a soul-healing song. You can still hear a story or two whose participants you may even remember... People knew it back then, and we know it now too, that the day should not begin without a homely bite, good wine, or proper Serbian rakija. In Serbia, everything is worth celebrating: a new beginning, baptism, birth, kinship, friendship... every day is worth finding time for a "small glass of conversation," and if many generations in old Belgrade knew that, somewhere in the Balkans, why should we change it?
